What is it really like for holidays in Puy-de-Dome
Slap bang in the middle of the Massif Central we have here the industrial revolution economic powerhouse at the centre of France with the Michelin tyre factory employing 30,000 people from the 1890's right up to the 1980's
Now vastly reduced the city has been through most of the major changes seen by all of western europe as the economy has moved to the high-tech and service industries
Just 15km outside the city is the Puy de Dome - 1464 metres above sea level and a sharp 400 metres from top to bottom - from here you really can - sometimes - see across to Mont Blanc in the Alpes
This - along with the rest of the Massif Central - comes from hefty volcanoes of old
Main town
Clermont-Ferrand
445 miles - 6.5 hours - from Calais
